Our inaugural show in our newly opened Chelsea gallery, on view now through April 11th, explores the widely varied depictions of the human face in ancient art.  The show includes images produced by the artists of the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Olmec, Moche, and Nazcas, among others.  Large works like Egyptian sarcophagi, Roman Mosaics, and Marble statuary are on view alongside treasures of miniature are including gems, jewelry and coins.  The face of antiquity, features a wide variety of artistic media.  Not only are there images of people and gods carved from marble, there are also depictions made in bronze, wood, and terracotta.  There are images of molded and painted pottery.  The more rare materials include jade, glass, silver, and gold.    The iconography of the human face in antiquity ran the gamut from idealized depictions of the divine to unflattering realistic portraits of mortals.  Some of the portraits are of known individuals while the identities of others are now lost to time.  Playful images that adorned containers or children’s playthings are on display alongside images that had more serious connotations.  The images range from secular to religious, from beautiful to frightful, realistic to idealized, but all convey a notion of the importance of the human face in art from its earliest beginnings.
