European Copper Alloy Chisel
A prehistoric European copper alloy chisel of squared-off elongated form with a slightly convex cutting edge.
Ca. 3300-3000 BC. Length: 6 1/2 in. (16.2 cm). Intact, excellent condition.
The chisel is of a type known throughout Europe from the end of the Neolithic through the Copper Age. Typically the tools are made almost entirely of smelted copper with only trace amounts of other metals as opposed to the later Bronze Age examples which contain a large percentage of tin serving to harden the metal.
Formerly in a German private collection.
