Daunian Kyathos
An ancient Daunian horn-handled kyathos, a wine ladle, with geometric decorations. Daunia, Southern Italy. Ca. 700 BC. Height: 3 5/8 in. (9.2 cm). Despite the popularity of Greek and later South-Italian Greek figural pottery, Daunian ware continued in its localized production to the end of the 4th century BC. Daunian ware is more rustic compared to Black-Glazed and Red-Figure ware with which it is contemporary. cf.: M. Mazzei, La Daunia Antica, (Milan, 1984), p. 175, pl. 218. With Cahn auktion, 2006; previously in a Swiss private collection, acquired between 1960 and 1980.
