Daunian Wine Krater
An ancient Daunian wine krater of buff clay with an everted rim and handles at each side, decorated with broad and wavy bands of brown slip.
Daunia, Southern Italy. 6th-5th century BC. Height: 8 1/4 in. (21 cm). Fragments of lip repaired, otherwise intact and complete.
Despite the popularity of Greek and later South-Italian Greek figural pottery, Daunian ware continued in its localized production to the end of the 4th century BC. Daunian ware is more rustic compared to Black-Glazed and Red-Figure ware with which it is contemporary.
Formerly in the collection of C. De Palma, New York, acquired in Israel in the 1980's.
