Old Babylonian Terracotta Erotic Plaque
An ancient Old Babylonian terracotta plaque depicting a man and a woman engaged in intercourse while the woman bends over to drink beer through a long straw.
Ca. 1900-1750 BC. Height: 5 1/2 in. (14 cm). Lower corner lacking, otherwise intact.
Terracotta votive plaques such as this were mass-produced in Babylon. Many portray this same scene. Their exact purpose is not known, but Old Babylonian erotic poetry often alludes to alcohol consumption and sexual activity.
