Roman Shipwreck Amphora
An ancient Roman Tripolitanian Type large pottery transport amphora with a thick rim, cylindrical neck, short handles, and a hollow conical spike at the base. There is a stamped horse-shoe shaped symbol under the rim.
Tripolitanian Type 1. Ca. 1st century AD. Height: 33 1/2 in. (85 cm). Intact, with marine incrustations.
Amphorae of this type were used for the storage and transportation of liquids, especially wine, olive oil, garum (fish sauce) and other foodstuffs.
