Attic Red-Figure Nolan Amphora

An ancient Greek Attic red-figure Nolan amphora. A young man pursues a draped female who looks back at him as she flees. The man wears a petasos hat and tunic, a scabbard at his side. On the reverse a draped female beckons. A ground line consisting of a meander and saltire pattern runs below.

Athens. Ca. 475-460 BC.
Height: 13 1/8 in. (33.4 cm).
Repaired.

The vase appears to be by the Charmides painter. A number of Nolan amphorae painted in very similar style bear the name XARMIDES. Among them are: MFA, Boston, no. 76.46; British Museum, London, nos. E289, E290, E292, E293; Cabinet des Medailles, Paris, 366, Louvre, Paris, G211. Most were found in Nola, Campania, Italy.
