Greek Terracotta Dionysos

Greek Terracotta Dionysos

An ancient Greek terracotta statuette of the youthful god Dionysos standing in a contraposto pose, draped in a long himation, a garland in his hair.

Ca. 2nd - 1st century BC.
Height: 6 3/4 in. (17 cm).
Intact.

The Greek deity Dionysos was associated with wine and vegetation, and by extension fertility. The god was popular in Rome under the name Bacchus or Liber Pater. The orgiastic rites of his retinue, Satyrs and Maenads, are often depicted in Classical art.
