Greek Terracotta Woman of Fashion

Greek Terracotta Woman of Fashion

An ancient Hellenistic Greek terracotta statuette of a fashionable woman standing with a himation draped over a long chiton. She wears a wreath and her hair is bound in a double bun at the top.

Ca. 3rd century BC.
Height: 6 5/8 in. (16.6 cm).

Terracotta statuettes depicting ancient Greek women in fine dress became especially popular during the Hellenistic period. Workshops at Tanagra in Boeotia, and at Rhodes, and Alexandria produced a great many finely modeled and painted examples of fashionable women.

cf.: L. Burn & R. Higgins, Catalogue of Greek Terracottas in the British Museum, Vol. III, (London, 2001), nos. 2702-2704.

Formerly with Phocian Jean Tano (nephew of Nicholas Tano, Cairo antiquities dealer, d. 1924), by descent to an English private collection, 1970's, marked Mar 10/'12 on the interior.
