Roman Alabaster Head of Zeus-Serapis
An ancient Roman alabaster head of Zeus-Serapis with a full beard and five serpentine curls across his forehead.
Ca. 2nd-3rd century AD. Height: 4 in. (10.1 cm).
The cult of Zeus-Serapis was adopted by Ptolemy I in order to create a unified Greco-Egyptian religion in Ptolemaic Egypt. The cult later spread throughourt the Roman Empire. The first statue of Zeus-Serapis is attributed to Bryaxis, a Greek sculptor working in the court of Ptolemy II around 280 BC. The god is usually depcited seate on a throne with Cerebus at his feet.
Formerly in a French Private collection, acquired in the 1940's.
