Cypriot Bird Oinochoe

A large ancient archaic Cypriot oinochoe, a wine pitcher, in the form of an abstract bird with two eyes at the spout and geometric designs on the body over a cream colored slip.

Cypro-Archaic I; White Painted IV Ware.
Ca. 750 - 600 BC.
Height: 9 1/2 in. (24 cm).

Formerly in the collection of The Cyprus Museum, Jacksonville, North Carolina; acquired at Sotheby's, New York, July 10, 1990, lot 442.

The President of the Republic of Cyprus in 1990, George Vassiliou, recognized the owner of the Cyprus Museum, Takey Crist, as having acquired the museum's pieces with full legal recognition by the Republic of Cyprus.
