Egyptian Pre-Dynastic Alabaster Vessel
An ancient Egyptian Pre-Dynastic cylindrical alabaster vessel with a slightly concave cylindrical body, everted rounded rim, and flat bottom. Pre-Dynastic Period, Ca. 3200 - 3000 BC. Height: 5 1/4 in. (13.3 cm). Alabaster was prized by the ancient Egyptians for its translucence and decorative veining, qualities which were further emphasized in the carving process. The shape of this vase is paralleled by ceramic vessels of the same period commonly used for tomb offerings. cf.: vessels found in burials at Minshat Abu Omar: K. Kroeper and D. Wildung, Minshat Abu Omar, (Munich, 1985), fig. 258. Formerly in the E. Manning collection, acquired from a Westchester, New York estate (old collection notations underside HB/CU 18).
