Roman Bronze Phalera with Silvered Decoration
An ancient Roman bronze phalera from a horse harness. The bronze disc has silvered decoration on the exterior surface along the edges and at the center, and a loop on the back for attachment. Ca. 1st-3rd century AD. Diameter: 3 1/4 in. (8.25 cm). Roman military phalerae were metal discs, usually made from gold, silver or bronze. They were used for military awards as well as to ornament horse trappings, where they were attached to the leather straps of the harness. Formerly in a German private collection.
