An ancient Roman bronze head of Mercury with silver inlaid eyes. The god wears a laurel wreath on his winged head.

Ca. 2nd century BC - 2nd century AD.
Height: 1 1/4 in. (3.2 cm).

Mercury (Greek: Hermes) was a pastoral divinity dating to the earliest Greek legends. He was the messenger and herald of the gods. He was also the patron of travelers, merchants, shepherds, and thieves. In the Roman period, he was especially associated with commerce.
