Attic Sessile Kantharos

Attic Sessile Kantharos

An ancient Attic Greek red-figure sessile kantharos of the St. Valentine class with feather patterns, ivy branches and laurel leaves.

Athens, Attica.
Ca. 460 - 450 BC.
Height: 3 3/4 in. (9.5 cm).

The sessile kanthoros type is a drinking vessel with two low vertical handles, rather than the high looped handles of the long stemmed kantharoi traditionally used by Dionysos. Sessile kantharoi are embellished with intricate foliate and geometric designs.

cf.: Metropolitan Museum of Art, inv. no. 56.171.60.

Formerly in a New York private collection, acquired in Switzerland in the 1980's.
