A Pre-Columbian Colima large burnished red pottery vessel with a ribbed gourd-form on tripod base with parrots acting as the three legs.

West Mexico.
Ca. 300 BC - 100 AD.
Maximum width: 14 in. (35.5 cm).

West Mexican civilization dates to 2nd millennium BC. In the area of Colima on the Pacific coast, a rich pottery tradition arose at the end of the 1st millennium BC in which deep shaft tombs were often filled with pottery in the form animals and human figures, likely companions and offerings of sustenance for the Afterlife.

Formerly in a New York private collection, acquired at Parke-Bernet Galleries, April 22, 1965, lot 47.
