Sumerian Gypsum Inscribed Statuette

An ancient Sumerian gypsum statuette of a standing female figure with clasped hands in the devout gesture wearing a fleece robe, an inscription on her right shoulder.

Early Dynastic Period.
Ca. 2600 - 2400 BC.
Height: 2 5/8 in. (6.7 cm).

The inscription reads: 'Ardu, the wet nurse of Shasha." Shasha was also the name of the wife of Entemena, an Early Dynastic ruler of Lagash, possibly be the same person.

Formerly in an American private collection.
