Egyptian Gilt Bronze Osiris

Egyptian Gilt Bronze Osiris

An ancient Egyptian large gilt bronze Osiris, standing, mummiform, holding the crook and flail and enveloped in a long cloak, his broad collar incised with details, inserted braided beard. He wears an elaborate atef crown with naturalistic frontal uraeus, the plumes resting on ram's horns and flanked by uraei, with paired pendant uraei suspended below, the wide set eyes and eyebrows recessed for inlay, remains of gilding on the body.

Third Intermediate Period, 21st - 22nd Dynasty,
Ca. 1070 - 712 BC.
Height excluding tenon: 11 1/8 in. (28.3 cm).

Osiris was one of the most important gods of the Egyptian pantheon. He was the lord of the underworld and god of the dead. One of his titles was therefore "ruler of the west," the west being the domain of the dead. Osiris was also the god of the inundation of the Nile and consequently fertility, and came to be seen as a protective deity over both the living and the dead.

Formerly in the H. and B. Marko collection, Michigan; Sotheby's, New York, June 20, 1990, lot 100.
