Maya Cylindrical Vase
An Pre-Columbian Mayan cylindrical vase with diagonal incised rib pattern around the body and large round 'eyes' in a band around the top. Vessels of this type were often used to consume Cacao beverages. Early Classic Period. Ca. 250 - 550 AD. Height: 5 5/8 in. (15 cm). The Maya were the dominant culture in Meso-America between the 3rd century BC and the end of the first millennium AD. Their architecture and art are of the finest found in Pre-Columbian America. Their highly developed pottery industry produced a wide variety of vase forms that varied widely in their decorative motifs and functions. Formerly in a Connecticut private collection.
