Roman Lead Pair of Fighting Gladiators
An ancient Roman lead pair of gladiators on a wheeled platform; a Thraex wearing a plumed broad-rimmed helmet, holds a square-shaped shield, and in his right hand holds a curved sword (sica); the Murmillo wears a plumed helmet with a stylized fish (mormylos) on the crest, an arm guard (manica) and carries a gladius and an oblong Gallic shield. Ca. 2nd - 3rd century AD. Height: 2 3/8 in. (6.2 cm). These small lead figures of gladiators were likely children's toys that could be pushed back and forth mimicking combat. Formerly in a German private collection.
