Old Babylonian Hematite Cylinder Seal
An ancient Old Babylonian hematite cylinder seal depicting two suppliants in long robes approach a god with scimitar raised and holding a burning torch; behind him an upside down figure likely carved to fill the space reserved for inscription. Old Babylonian Period. Ca. 1900 - 1600 BC. Height: 7/8 in. (2 cm). In modern gold finger ring mount. cf.: B. Tessier, Ancient Near Eastern Cylinder Seals from the Marcopoli Collection, (Berkeley, 1984), p. 140, cat. no. 118. Formerly in the collection of the renowned Iraqi architect Said Ali Madhloom (1921-2017), brought to the United Kingdom in 1981.
