Egyptian Bronze Selket

Egyptian Bronze Selket

An ancient Egyptian bronze standard finial in the form of the goddess Selket, wearing a tripartite wig and crown, her arms crossed, with the body of a scorpion, with stinger raised, on an integral plinth, with lotus form base.

Late Period,
Ca. 700 - 30 BC.
Height: 3 in. (7.6 cm).

Selket (Serqet, Serket, Selqet) was an ancient Egyptian goddess of fertility, medicine, magic, and healing of venomous stings. Her name means "(she who) tightens the throat," as one who succumbs to a scorpion sting. She was depicted as a scorpion with the bust of a woman or as a woman with a scorpion headdress. Although Selket is not known to have had any temples, she had a sizable number of priests in many communities, probably devoted to the curing of venomous bites an stings.

Formerly in the collection of Victor Benedict, France, acquired between 1890 and 1930.
