Roman Bronze Asclepius

An ancient Roman bronze statuette of Asclepius, the god of medicine, bearded and bare-chested wrapped in a himation, in his right hand he holds a poppy bulb, his left arm behind his back.

Ca. 1st - 2nd century AD.
Height: 4 1/2 in. (11.4 cm).

Asclepius was the ancient Greek god of medicine. As a son of Apollo he shared his father's healing aspects. The snake entwined staff of Asclepius, remains a symbol of medicine today. Ancient Greek doctors were known as the Therapeutae of Asclepius.

Formerly in a New Jersey private collection.
