Etruscan Pontic Chalice

Etruscan Pontic Chalice

An ancient Etruscan Pontic chalice decorated with a black-figure frieze of linked palmette and lotus buds with added red and white details.

Pontic Group.
Ca. 600 - 550 BC.
Height: 5 1/2 in. (14 cm).

Etruscan Pontic Group vases are closely related to East Greek Ionian vases. It is assumed, that they were produced in Etruria by craftsmen who had emigrated from Ionia. Their misleading name was coined by Ferdinand Dummler on the basis of a vase depicting an archer, whom he mistook to be a Scythian from the Black Sea region (or the Pontus).

Formerly in the F. & H. Schwitter-Lagutt collection, Basel, Switzerland, acquired prior to 1971.

On loan to the Antikenmuseum, Basel, 1971 - 2022.
