Roman Bronze Patera with Panther Handle

Roman Bronze Patera with Panther Handle

An ancient Roman bronze large patera, the ribbed handle terminating in a panther head, its ears back and jaws agape.

Ca. 1st - 2nd century AD.
Lenght: 14 3/4 in. (37.5 cm).

A finely worked patera such as this one was used for serving food or drink at dinner parties or for pouring libations at religious ceremonies.
Usually featuring a ram or a wolf on its handle, the present patera with a panther is quite rare.

With Jean-Philippe Mariaud De Serres, Paris, 1990s; subsequently in a Swiss private collection.
