An ancient Egyptian miniature lapis lazuli amulet of the child Horus (Harpokrates) crouching, one hand to his mouth, the sidelock of youth on the right side of his head.
Late Period, 700-30 BC.
Height: 14 mm.
Looped for suspension.
The lapis lazuli with tiny flecks of gold.
Lapis lazuli was the most prized of the semi-
precious stones known to the Egyptians. It was imported from as far afield as modern Afganistan from as early as the Pre-Dynastic Period.
Harpokrates, the infant son of Isis and Horus was a symbol of youth and fertility and essentially a patron deity of childhood.
