A faience ancient Egyptian amulet depicting a sow (female pig), with breasts engorged for nursing its litter.

Late Period, probably XXVIth Dynasty (Saite) 664-525 BC.
Length: 14 mm.
Intact, no repairs.
Looped for suspension.

The sow was associated with the gods, Nut and Set. Images of sows were sometimes used as New Year gifts as they were thought to ensure fecundity.

Formerly in a New York private collection.
