An ancient Roman large pottery transport amphora. Amphorae of this type were used for the storage and transportation of liquids, especially wine, olive oil and other foodstuffs.

Intact, with marine incrustations.
Said to have been found near Sardinia.
This amphora is of the of the Richborough 527 Type and was probably manufactured in the Eolie islands (off the north-east corner of Sicily), where kiln-waste has been discovered near the site of Lipari.
Formerly in an old German private collection.
