Silver denarius, 18 mm, 3.72 gm. Obv. CAESAR AVGVSTVS Bare head of Augustus left (bankers marks) Rev. SIGNIS RECEPTIS SPQR Round shield inscribed CL V; aquila and signum flanking. Uncertain Spanish mint (Colonia Patricia?), ca. 19 BC. Octavian, the great-nephew of Julius Caesar, rose to prominence following Caesar's death. With his defeat of Antony at Actium he emerged victorious. He was declared Augustus in 27 BC, the first Roman Emperor.
