An ancient Roman marble sarcophagus fragment with a carved relief depicting a centauromachy scene, with a fallen nude young warrior below a standing centaur.

Ca. 2nd century AD.
Length: 25 1/2 in. (65 cm).

There are only a few known examples of sarcophagi with representations of centauromachies.

Formerly in an old French private collection; subsequently sold at auction at the Hotel Drouot, Paris in the 1970s; Sotheby's, New York, December 6th, 2012, lot 35.
