Attic Greek Black-Figure Lekythos: Phanyllos Group

An ancient large Attic Greek black-figure lekythos of the Phanyllos group with two women draped in black mantles with red trim pulled up over their heads stand with their hands extended in the attitude of mourning between two large apotropaic eyes; palmettes on the shoulder and ivy on the neck.

Athens, Attica.
Ca. 510 - 500 BC.
Height: 11 3/4 in. (30 cm).

The lekythos was used to hold olive oil in antiquity and was often left as a grave offering.

Formerly in a French private collection.
